Why the Virginia Derby Is Unlike Any Other 1 1/8 Mile Race 🐎

The 2026 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs is one of the most interesting races on the road to the Kentucky Derby.

This year’s 2026 Virginia Derby is run at 1 1/8 miles on the dirt, but unlike most races at this distance, the unique track layout at Colonial Downs makes it a one-turn mile and an eighth. Colonial Downs features a 1ΒΌ-mile oval, which means the Virginia Derby begins on a long straight run before the field reaches the first and only turn. Because of this race architecture, the Virginia Derby often favors tactical horses with speed that can sustain throughout the race, rather than deep closers who rely on a pace collapse. In this video, I evaluate the 2026 Virginia Derby contenders, the race architecture, and which horses best fit this unique one-turn configuration.

2026 Virginia Derby Contender Analysis

1. Buetane (Bob Baffert) One of the fastest horses in the field. Tactical pace and strong workouts make him a major win contender in this one-turn configuration.

2. Grittiness (Todd Pletcher) Has experience at the mile-and-an-eighth distance but the speed figures have been light. Needs a significant jump forward to compete in the Virginia Derby.

3. Epic Desire (Todd Pletcher) Shows a tactical running style that could fit the Colonial Downs track, but light speed figures and repeated β€œno kick” race notes raise concerns.

4. Work (Doug O'Neill) Ships in from California but has struggled to post competitive speed figures. Late-race weakening makes him difficult to support in the 2026 Virginia Derby.

5. High Camp (William Walden) Improving speed figures and a determined stretch run make High Camp one of the most interesting contenders in the Virginia Derby. Tactical speed fits the race architecture well.

6. Lockstocknpharoah (Thomas Drury, Jr) Undefeated in two starts with sustained energy throughout the race. Synthetic form at Turfway Park could translate well to the dirt at Colonial Downs in the 2026 Virginia Derby.

7. Incredibolt (Riley Mott) Talented runner who struggled in the Holy Bull Stakes. If he rebounds to earlier form, he could become a wildcard threat in this race.

8. Confessional (Brad Cox) Strong early career races and a stalking running style make Confessional an excellent fit for the Virginia Derby setup. Blinkers return for this race.

9. Ocelli (D. Whitworth Beckman) Still searching for his first win but has shown tactical speed and competitive efforts. Could be a board threat with the right trip.

10. Clocker Special (Rodolphe Brisset) Consistent board hitter but faces a significant class jump in the 2026 Virginia Derby and would need a major step forward.
