Belmont Stakes 2026 Contender-by-Contender Analysis | Pace, Profiles & Saratoga Setup
The Belmont Stakes 2026 returns to Saratoga Race Course - a track where configuration makes pace and positioning more important than ever. In this video, I evaluate each contender in the 2026 Belmont Stakes field evaluating the strengths and the vulnerabilities of each horse through the lens of pace, distance, running style, and Saratoga’s unique track dynamics.
I looked at historical winners of the Travers Stakes as the Travers is run at this 1 and 1/4 mile distance at Saratoga. I found even historical factors that typically shape a winner here at Saratoga going this distance and examine how each contender fits this specific race setup. You’ll learn:

our 2026 Belmont Stakes Field:
1. Vitruvian Man (Trainer: Doug O’Neill) West Coast invader who is new to the Triple Crown trail. Enters the Belmont Stakes with only one win and would need to improve to take on the contenders here at Saratoga.
2. Powershift (Trainer: Todd Pletcher) Coming off a maiden win on Kentucky Derby day. He will be part of the pace scenario in the 2026 Belmont Stakes but has not been tested at distances longer than 1 and 1/16th.
3. Chief Wallabee (Trainer: Bill Mott) Talented runner with only four races and finished fourth in the 2026 Kentucky Derby. Gets 2025 Belmont Stakes winning team of Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado
4. Renegade (Trainer: Todd Pletcher): Second in the 2026 Kentucky Derby and always a fighter. He does come from behind but his trainer, Todd Pletcher, believes he is versatile. Has a top jockey with Irad Ortiz, Jr.
5. Ottinho (Trainer: Chad Brown). One of three Chad Brown trainees who has not raced since the Toyota Blue Grass At Keeneland in April
6. Growth Equity (Trainer: Chad Brown). New to the Triple Crown trail, winner of the 2026 Peter Pan, and one of two horses in the Belmont Stakes with prior Saratoga experience.
7. Commandment (Trainer: Brad Cox). Immensely talented horse with 4 wins but just didn’t have his best race in the Kentucky Derby. Can he redeem himself in the Belmont Stakes
8. Emerging Market (Trainer: Chad Brown). Coming into the Belmont Stakes with only three prior races, one was the Kentucky Derby. Threw a shoe in the 2026 Kentucky Derby and flattened in the stretch. He is looking for that premier win on Belmont Stakes day.
9. Golden Tempo (Trainer: Cherie Devaux): Winner of the 2026 Kentucky Derby but will he be able to overcome a slower pace and shorter stretch?
