The 2026 Florida Derby Could Come Down to Inches!
To the Wire! Maybe even down to inches! That is how the 2026 Florida Derby is shaping up to be. With 100 Kentucky Derby points on the line, nine contenders look to be contesting a fast paced race and a very short stretch at Gulfstream Park. This means I can see multiple horses battling down the stretch for the win and their ticket to Kentucky Derby 152.
In this preview I evaluate:
- Race Architecture - the pace and track and race design and how that can impact who wins
- Running Style
- Pedigree and ability to go the distance
- Speed and performance
I go through all nine contenders pointing out details others may miss to provide you with the race insights you need for you to select your winner of Florida Derby 2026. This isnβt just any Kentucky Derby prep race. The 2026 Florida Derby is a pivotal moment on the road to Louisville and it may come down to the smallest margins.
Here are your contenders:
π Albus (Trainer: Riley Mott). This is deep waters for a horse that just won for the very first time a month ago. Eye catching victory and professional running style but can he take on some of these powerhouses entering Florida Derby 2026?
π Chief Wallabee (Trainer: Bill Mott). A powerhouse contender who just lost the Fountain of Youth by inches. Brings speed, running style, pedigree, and heart to the Florida Derby.
π Wayneβs Law (Trainer: Amador Merei Sanchez) Two wins here at Gulfstream Park and second to Renegade in the Sam F Davis but unsure about todayβs pace for him.
π Commandment (Trainer: Brad Cox) Laid down the law in the Fountain of Youth and had a very strong gallop out. Likes Gulfstream Park and the Winnerβs Circle but was he aided by the inside? Trainer won the Florida Derby last year.
π Redland Rebels (Trainer: Patrick Biancone) Will he run here or in the Arkansas Derby? Has experience at Gulfstream Park but was on the turf. Last race went to the lead in the Tampa Bay Derby but came in fourth.
π Nearly (Trainer: Todd Pletcher). This horse is nearly perfect with 3 consecutive wins here at Gulfstream Park and total margin of victory of 20 lengths! Why do the notes say mild drive in the Holy Bull. Should we be worried about the distance in the 2026 Florida Derby? This trainer has won 8 editions of the Florida Derby in the last 20 years.
π Timeless Victory (Trainer: Edward Plesa, Jr). Big name but this is big class for him. Has 2 wins here at Gulfstream but this is a different class of horses he is facing in Florida Derby 2026.
π The Puma (Trainer: Gustavo Delgado). Went into the Tampa Bay Derby a maiden and came out a star. Has Gulfstream experience and is on the improve. Can he be a threat in the 2026 Florida Derby?
π Gregarious (Trainer: Jose Castro). One and only one race and still a maiden. That race was at this distance but does this seem like deep waters for him?
