The Arkansas Derby awards 100 Kentucky Derby points to the winner meaning they will get a spot in that starting gate of Kentucky Derby 152.

In this analysis, I take you through the race architecture and how track design and pace may impact the race. The Arkansas Derby will be run at the mile and an eighth distance, the longest distance for most of these runners so far. Then I go through each of the contenders and evaluate their strengths, weaknesses, and how they fit the structure of the race.

Meet the contenders who want into the 2026 Kentucky Derby 🐎

1. Redland Rebels (Trainer: Patrick Biancone). Likes the lead, one and only win was on the turf. Would need to be able to get the extra distance in the 2026 Arkansas Derby.

2. Silent Tactic (Trainer: Mark Casse). Announces himself late with the big late kick. Likes Oaklawn and has always been in the exacta.

3. Blackout Time (Trainer: Kenny McPeek). Last time out it was lights out. But he may have needed that race. Stalking style and impressive workout leading into the 2026 Arkansas Derby.

4. Bricklin (Trainer: Rodolphe Brisset). Likes the lead but has not done well in classy competiton.

5. Taptastic (Trainer: Steve Asmussen). Only one race. Is he the next Emerging Market. Strong pedigree.

6. Renegade (Trainer: Todd Pletcher). Class, speed, late speed, and trainer looking for his 6th Arkansas Derby win.

7. Napoleon Solo - scratched

8. Exosome (Trainer: Kelsey Danner). Deeper ecosystem here. Would need to improve to win the 2026 Arkansas Derby

9. Litmus Test (Trainer: Bob Baffert). Blinkers off - will he be more tactical. Brings class to Arkansas Derby 2026.
