Wood Memorial 2026: A Field of Question Marks?
Every horse in the 2026 Wood Memorial has talentβ¦ but every single one also has something to prove. From distance questions to class tests to post positionsβ this is a field full of question marks ????????
The Wood Memorial 2026 is one of the last of the 2026 Kentucky Derby prep races and awards 100 points to the winner. For me, this has been the toughest Kentucky Derby prep race to analyze. In this video, I am going to relay how the track design may impact the race as well as provide insights into the pace and the running style that is typically favored in this race.
Then we meet each of the 13 contenders and ask:
π Who fits the race shape
π Which contenders have upside and which have concerns
π Every question each horse has to answer There is no clear standout in this race so many questions must be answered.
Meet the Contenders:
β¨ 1. Napoleon Solo (Trainer: Chad Summers). Dominant victory in the Grade 1 Champagne but can he get back to that level of performance and prove the distance is in him?
β¨ 2. Talk to Me Jimmy (Trainer: Rudy Rodriguez). Dominant victory right here going this distance but was his speed really that light?
β¨ 3. Right to Party (Trainer: Kenneth McPeek). Is he in the right party, can he prove he can hang with this class of runners in the Wood Memorial 2026?
β¨ 4. Steel (Trainer: Bill Mott). Comes into this race with only one race underneath of him but it was a win. Does he have the foundation for the Wood Memorial?
β¨ 5. Ocelli (Trainer: Whitworth Beckman). Is still a maiden. Will the equipment change help and will he find the winners' circle in the 2026 Wood Memorial.
β¨ 6. Minorinconvenience (Trainer: Amelia Green). Stepping up to an open race after being in state bred and restricted races. Talented with a win here at Aqueduct.
β¨ 7. Albus (Trainer: Riley Mott). His sire says sprinter but damsire says distance. Which one will dominate?
β¨ 8. Courting (Trainer: Todd Pletcher). $5MM horse, elite pedigree, but lukewarm performances. Does he step up today?
β¨ 9. Bravaro (Trainer: Saffie Joseph, Jr). Ready to shine, getting back to the surface he likes. But does his performance behind Nearly suggest something else?
β¨ 10. Red Zone Runner (Trainer: Hugo Padilla). Big performance last time out, will be part of the pace, can he back up that prior performance?
β¨ 11. Ottinho (Trainer: Chad Brown). A Chad Brown runner with heart and grit.
β¨ 12. Buetane (Trainer: Bob Baffert). Talented but can he stop the regression?
β¨ 13. Iron Honor (Trainer: Chad Brown). Undefeated here at Aqueduct but post 13?
