Post Position 4: Universe (Trainer: Kenny McPeek). Has the class but is lacking the wins and speed.

Post Position 5: Golden Tempo (Trainer: Cherie DeVaux). Blinkers go on as this closer needs to be more engaged early. Likes the track and loves the stretch here at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Post Position 6: Spirit of Royal (Trainer: Dallas Stewart). Brings the spirit but is lacking speed and potentially distance ability. Trainer can stun!

Post Position 7: Blacksmith (Trainer: Bob Baffert). Bob Baffert does not typically send his horses to the Louisiana Derby. This horse in intriguing here.

Post Position 8: Easterly (Trainer: Brad Cox). Lightly raced but talented with a strong gallop out suggesting he can get the extra distance. Brings the TizNow influence in his pedigree.

This year’s 2026 Virginia Derby is run at 1 1/8 miles on the dirt, but unlike most races at this distance, the unique track layout at Colonial Downs makes it a one-turn mile and an eighth. Colonial Downs features a 1¼-mile oval, which means the Virginia Derby begins on a long straight run before the field reaches the first and only turn. Because of this race architecture, the Virginia Derby often favors tactical horses with speed that can sustain throughout the race, rather than deep closers who rely on a pace collapse. 2026 RISEN STAR PREVIEW The road to the 2026 Kentucky Derby takes a major turn this Saturday at Fair Grounds. With 50 Kentucky Derby points to the winner, only eight runners, and 1 1/8 miles on the dirt, this race could reshape the Derby picture in a big way.

Here are the contenders:

PP1. Universe 🐎 Trainer: Kenny McPeek Jockey: Christopher Elliott Consistent and honest with five starts and four board finishes, but hasn’t won since October and regressed to a low speed figure last out in the Smarty Jones. Blinkers go on. The big question is, can he get the distance?

PP4. Paladin 🐎 Trainer: Chad Brown Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione This horse has it all. Two-for-two including the G2 Remsen at this same 1 1/8-mile distance with highest speed figure in the race. Tactical speed in a race lacking pace, proven stamina, elite connections. He checks every box and looks like the one to beat.

PP5. Chip Honcho 🐎 Trainer: Steve Asmussen Jockey: Luis Saez Won the Gun Runner here with a competitive speed figure and had a wide trip in the Lecomte. Blinkers come off and better positioning is likely. Tactical and fits the pace scenario, but nine furlongs remains the question.

PP6. Colt Forty Seven 🐎 Trainer: Keith Desormeaux Jockey: James Graham Most experienced horse in the field but stepping up sharply in class. Improved each race but needs another jump forward. Notice he is also a closer.

PP7. Courting 🐎 Trainer: Todd Pletcher Jockey: John Velazquez $5 million Curlin colt with a powerhouse pedigree. Fourth in the Remsen behind Paladin and gets blinkers on for his three-year-old debut. Hasn’t yet run a breakout race, but the bloodlines suggest improvement is coming. Dangerous if he takes the expected step forward.

PP8. Quality Mischief 🐎 Trainer: Brad Cox Jockey: Florent Geroux Has faced several of these and hasn’t beaten them yet. Best speed figure makes him competitive but not superior. A closer who needs pace help — possible late runner if things heat up.

4. Star Sweeper (Trainer: Louis Linder) Star Sweeper has been cleaning up sprint races, but this jump in distance and class might be asking him to sweep far more than he’s shown so far.

5. Mailata (Trainer: Robert Reid) Mailata has been delivering wins at Parx like clockwork, and Robert Reid believes the farther he goes the better he gets — but this is a serious step up in competition.

1. Quality Mischief (Trainer: Brad Cox) By Into Mischief and trained by last year’s Lecomte-winning conditioner, this colt is still figuring things out — but if he lives up to his name, he could cause some trouble late.

I’ve crunched 25 years of data and identified 7 historical angles that have pointed to past winners — and I am using them to separate the pretenders from the contenders in one of the biggest 3-year-old race of the fall.

This 1 1/8-mile dirt showdown on September 20, 2025 has it all: pace players, strong contenders, and a few major question marks. Get ready — I am going horse by horse to help you find your winner!

🐎 Horse-by-Horse Analysis

1️⃣ So Sandy (Cherie DeVaux / Kendrick Carmouche) – Colt with two sharp runs at this distance (1 win, 1 place). Improving form but hasn’t cracked triple-digit speed figures yet. Rail draw may not be ideal for him, and those bumping incidents raise some eyebrows.

2️⃣ Altobelli (James Nicholson Jr. / Angel Castillo) – 15-start veteran with 4 wins (mostly on synthetic). No graded stakes, no proven stamina at 1⅛, no triple-digit speed figs.

3️⃣ Magnitude (Steve Asmussen / Ben Curtis) – The field’s top speed horse from his gate-to-wire Risen Star romp. Missed the Triple Crown trail with an ankle chip but came back blazing in the Iowa Derby. Ran third in the Travers behind Sovereignty. Can he control the pace here? If he does — earthquake incoming?

4️⃣ David of Athens (Brendan Walsh / Tyler Gaffalione) – Lightly raced but talented. Two wins in three starts including a runaway mile score at Ellis. Still developing and has bullet workouts, but lacks graded stakes experience.

5️⃣ Happily Delusional (Louis Linder Jr. / Paco Lopez) – Local Parx horse with one win in 11 starts. No horse with Parx experience has won the PA Derby in 25 years, and his speed figs say he’s up against it.
